Experiences and anecdotes that linger and endure.
People who impress, abide, inspire.
The world beyond that invites and delights.
I am Tshering Denkar, popularly known as Denkars Getaway. I am the first Bhutanese travel blogger and vlogger. In the past five years, I have traveled extensively within the kingdom of Bhutan. Today I am supported and idolized by many Bhutanese and aspiring travelers worldwide as a trailblazer and a local Bhutanese travel expert. Recently I have competed in a travel series with Hollywood actor Will Smith for NatGeo and Disney Plus.
I hold a Masters Degree in Tourism Management from Thailand. As a traveler, I have contributed to promoting domestic tourism and travel literature about Bhutan. Apart from promoting travel destinations, unique customs, and traditions and sharing fantastic travel stories, I am a published author of the bestselling travel book “The Tourist Within”. The book tells myriad stories about my lust for travel. From lofty unclimbed mountains to sweltering foothills to the last surviving nomads, the colorful stories capture Bhutan’s diverse physical and cultural landscape.
Besides following my passion, I offer services such as “ Meet & Greet Session” with tourists and have led numerous groups of tourists both on cultural and adventure tours. After years of exploring Bhutan, I have started to operate a travel agent called Bhutan Travel Escape that caters to travelers who wish to travel to my beautiful kingdom.
The blogs here are beautifully strung together by a common narrative thread anchored in the author’s keen socio-cultural sensibilities. As diverse as the subjects are, what shines through faithfully is the candid tone and unassuming style of writing.
This anthology is a tribute to my passion and fortitude, a small country’s beauty and diversity, and, above all, the people who populate the stories in this book who made all the travels possible. The reader will be amazed by the variety of stories a small country can contain and the number of stories a single person often traveling solo or hitch-hiking can tell. If you can picture and feel someone being charged at by a raging yak, dismayed by a shrinking river source, exhilarated by my first visit to a palace, you will enjoy this blog.
